Autumn Grass Map on Pine

Tohaku Hasegawa was was a painter from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the early Edo period in Astronomical 8th year (1539) – February 24th, 15th year of Keicho ( March 19th, 1610). He is a representative of painter in the Momoyama period. He was born in Nanao of Noto country. He had been painting Buddhist paintings and portraits related with Nichiren in Nanao since he was a 20s. Motokame second (1571), he proceeded to the capital, learned the style of painting of factions from Kano school , and attracted with ink paintings of Muqi Fachang and Sesshu ,etc. He was respected by Sen no Rikyu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi , and became a painter who threatened the Kano school, which was at the top of the art world at that time. Then, Hasegawa school whose founder was Tohaku became a opposite faction against Kano school. It established a unique style of painting in both KimuAoi wall paintings and ink paintings. One of collections in The Tokyo National Museum, “Pine Forest View Folding Screen” that is a national treasure is famous as the masterpiece of Japanese ink painting. He referred himself as “Sesshu Godai” in his later years.
